Jizzy Pearl | Love/Hate | Ratt | Adlers Appetite | L.A. Guns | Quiet Riot | April 2004 |
This month we have one of the hardest working musicians in the business,
with everything under his belt from book, tours, tons of bands, and now a solo c.d. release..
I've been a fan of Jizzy's since the Love/Hate days..
and have followed him through everything else he has done.
Now he has released a solo c.d.. AND is still lead singer for 2 bands..
Find out about his past .. present.. and future ..
Right here.
Jizzy has done it all...
J-Back in the day.. how did you hook up with the guys in Love/Hate?
Jizzy-On my site there is an extensive Love/Hate history--anyone interested in learning about the peaks and valleys of being a musician should read it and take it to heart...JIZZYPEARL.COM
J-How did everyone get along?
Jizzy-We were as close as brothers in arms, in the trenches, fighting the common enemy, poverty, sobriety and being 4 complete unknowns---
J-How important was the look back then? Do you ever look back and think "what the hell was I thinking?"
Jizzy-We experimented just like everyone. A lot of that stuff is goofy now, bad hair, make-up, garish outfits but back then you looked like everyone and everyone looked like you, uniforms in the Army of Rock. And in answer to your question I don't look back at outfits from my past, I look much better now.
J-What was your favorite release with Love/Hate?
Jizzy-Blackout in the Red Room...the best record we ever did.
J-Least favorite, or just didn't turn out like you hoped?
Jizzy-There was a Skid solo record called living off Laidlaw which in my eyes sucked...but that's just my opinion...
J-Favorite tour? any good stories?
Jizzy-AC/DC arena tour was the favorite. We were popular in the UK so a lot of those tours were memorable...lots of good tour hi-jinks in the Love/Hate history on my site.
J-What led to the break up of the band?
Jizzy-The change in music, band members getting married and needing a more solid profession than gypsy troubadour--drug and alcohol played a part, creative differences between me and the bass player---bands break up for the same reason friends in high school do...sometimes you just run out of things in common.
J-After you left the band.. and side projects.. recordings?
Jizzy-I tried a few solo bands but I was beset by more drugs and drug addicts needing to be coddled...I threw my hands up after a while and tried to re-form L/H again but was again screwed by other people's drug weaknesses...L.A. is a haven for a lot of musicians who think of themselves as being victimized, therefore they feel they do not get the breaks that other guys do. In reality if they weren't fucked up on heroin, speed, alcohol, coke etc. they might be able to keep a band together for longer than 2 months
J-You also write books..tell us what they are like.. and how many?
Jizzy-I have written 2 books of short stories...what are they like? hard to describe...go to my website and read my "rants' for a taste of Jizz
J-Are you planning on writing more?
Jizzy-My third book is half written...I don't know when I will finish it.
J-You also sang with L.A. Guns.. how did you hook up with them?
Jizzy-My Love/Hate band exploded in a cloud of crack smoke and I heard that L.A. Guns were looking for somebody so I called. Steve Riley told me that Joe Leste had already gotten the job but Tracii asked me down anyway. I ended up getting the gig.
J-What led to you leaving that band?
Jizzy-They got Phil Lewis back...obviously
J-Do you still talk to any of the members?
Jizzy-Yes I am still good friends with all of those guys...I have a lot of good memories from being in that band. It's a very fun band to play in.
J-Onto Ratt.. how did you get that gig?
Jizzy-I tried out for the band after Pearcy left, me and all the usual suspects, every singer from every L.A. cock rock band tried out---and this guy Robert Mason got the gig. They did a showcase for Sony with Mason and didn't get their record deal renewed, not because of Robert mind you--anyway Mason decided he didn't want to do it, they auditioned me again and I got the gig. It seems I get all my gigs by default.
J-Any plans to record with the guys? or just more touring?
Jizzy-As far as I know RATT has zero plans to record with me...which explains why I'm writing songs for the Adler project right now.
J-Whats your favorite tour since youve been in the band? (package tour)
Jizzy-All package tours are fun, for the most part. There may be bad shows here and there but it's always cool having the comaradarie of other bands and friends.
J-Least favorite? and why?
Jizzy-I've had a few bad tours, bad booking, no money, lying clubowners, no showers for days...but who hasn't.
J-Favorite Ratt song to do live?
Jizzy-I guess Nobody Rides for Free
J-Least favorite.. or tired of singing..?
Jizzy-You can get tired of singing any song if you do it often enough...in any band.
J-Any plans to tour this year w/RATT?
Jizzy-I have heard we will be doing dates but that's up to the two Bosses, not me.
J-While off tour w/Ratt you reformed Love/Hate..who is in the line-up and what made you decide to get it going again?
Jizzy-Me, Robbie, Keri and a guy named Dave Moreno on drums. I do it for fun and the excuse for a free trip to England every year.
J-Also toured over seas.. how did that go..?
Jizzy-We toured with the Adler thing overeas and every show was sold out--the fans brought all their old G'n'R LP's to sign and a few L/H ones as well. We're doing a month of dates this summer, clubs and some festival dates
J-Any new releases w/Love/Hate stuff?
Jizzy-Love/Hate is me and only me now. Two guys from the original band are retired from music and one is an asshole that no one wants to work with so that leaves me as the Sole Survivor...so who knows on that one.
J-Any plans to tour here in the states?
Jizzy-Love/Hate cannot tour here for financial reasons. I suppose we could do it in a van very cheap very primitive but then it wouldn't be fun anymore so I don't think so...
J-You are also singing in Adlers Appitite w/Steven Adler.. who else is in that band.. and how did you hook up with him?
Jizzy-Me, Keri and Robbie of course, the so-called "band whores"...I call it being a working musician. Brent Muscat is also in the band and of course Steven.
J-What happened to the name Suki Jones?
Jizzy-I found that promoters weren't smart enough to promote the band as Suki Jones--they were extremely vague about who was in the band and what we were doing. Sometimes Steven's name was not even on the flyer, there was no mention of Guns 'n' Roses in the ads---Adler's Appetite is a G'nR cover thing, some people might think the name is goofy but you know exactly what you're getting. I'm writing songs right now for an all-original CD with this line-up and we won't be calling it Adler's Appetite...we might call it Suki, I don't know
J-Your also been touring w/them.. how is that going..?
Jizzy-Tours in Europe have been great...tours here in the States are hit and miss but I think you could say that for every band in our genre. You can't keep beating these clubs to death every year, year after year without the attendance suffering
J-What's the set list like.. all GNR or other covers too?
Jizzy-Yeah mostly G'n'R...that's what people want to hear, especially overseas where they haven't heard these songs played in a long time.
J-Favorite GNR song you do live?
Jizzy-I don't know...they're all good.
J-Even with allll these bands.. and playing live, writing etc. you just released your first solo cd... "Just a Boy", How long have you been working on the cd?
Jizzy-I worked on it for 2 years, on and off. Muddy helped me with the production, he's a very talented guy--we recorded and mixed the whole thing in his bedroom which begs the question " why would anyone pay thousands of dollars to make a record when all you need is Protools?"
J-How would you describe the music to someone who hasnt heard it yet?
Jizzy-Good.
J-What's your favorite track?
Jizzy-"Better days" is my favorite song off that record. For some reason it always makes me feel good when I hear it.
J-Least favorite , or didn't turn out like you wanted?
Jizzy-There's always stuff you wish you could do better...I thought the same way on the L./H records and they each cost $250,000 to make...
J-Will you be touring for this release?
Jizzy-Hopefully I'll be playing songs off that record in some of my other working bands but a solo tour? No...
J-Did you do all the writing? and who all plays on the cd?
Jizzy-Other than one song I wrote the whole thing. Several guest guitar players are on it, most notably Steve Stevens and Tracii Guns.
J-Planning on releasing more solo cd's?
Jizzy-I'm planning on releasing this new project, call it Suki Jones for now, I'm actively writing songs for it right now--
J-What else do you have planned for the rest of 2004?
Jizzy-Touring through most of this summer with Adler and RATT and then hopefully working on a project with a television production company with my books that will make me a lot of $$$---fingers crossed on that one.
J-How do you feel about mp3's and file sharing?
Jizzy-I think it sucks. It makes people like me not want to put all that work into making a record when someone will just download it for free. The argument that people like Metallica don't need the money doesn't ring true with guys like me. Thank God there are no book CD burners...yet.
J-How about the internet in general.. as far as promoting bands..etc?
Jizzy-It's good for self promotion definitely but people take it's power too seriously...a website isn't going to get you a record deal or help you write better songs...or help you sell coffee mugs.
J-Do you have a site people can keep up with all your info?
Jizzy- WWW.JIZZYPEARL.COM
J-Any new bands your into.. ?
Jizzy-No...I don't like new music, I like good music like Zep and the Who.
J-What would be in your cd player right now?
Jizzy-Radiohead...
J-Thats about it.. anything you would like to say to youe fans reading this?
Jizzy-Eat right, exercise regularly and you're still going to die---so fuck it-- live a little.
